Hey guys, this a copy and paste
Hey,
I'v had my car for about 3 weeks now, and it's already been quite an experience, so I thought I'd better get a project thread going and see what all you lovely people think of my baby.
I'v wanted an MX-5 since I was 15 (I'm now 22) and I'v been saving from every shitty job, birthday and Christmas and FINALLY I had enough to get what I'v always wanted, a 1995 Mk1 British Racing Green 1.8
She was in Cheltenham Spa, I am in Glasgow, all that stood between us was a 12 hour Megabus and 2 delayed trains...and a breakdown in my pals Mk1 Jetta en route to buy her!
So here's what she looked like when I got her
I drove her from Cheltenham Spa to just outside Newcastle without her missing a beat, so decided to pop in on my parents to show them. Picture the scene, having just done 300+ miles incident free I decided to take my mum for a blast down the back roads around their house, 100 years down the road I hit a trench masquerading as a pothole and rip a hole in the side of the O/S rear tire (which was 500 miles old). It is at this point that I discover the "complete tool kit" included in the sale was missing the wheel wrench, cue me running around the village knocking doors and returning with a collection of wrenches great and small, none of which would fit the wheel nuts. Finally used the one out of my mum's Yaris and managed to get the spacesaver on. My girlfriend then got a call from work asking her to cover a shift the next day (this was at 11.30 PM) in Glasgow starting at 9 so what followed was a 4 hour drive at 40 from Newcastle to Glasgow, not the way I had envisaged my first blast over the border roads.
I took this as a sign that my baby was sick of standard shoes and would do anything to get them off, so a few frantic phone calls found me 2 of these....
for £40 I couldn't say no, especially as they have 2 Toyo Proxies with 5mm left.
JD-UK yo! (not the sports shop)
I though it looked ok, however I had to go meet my Dad to get my kilt fitted, and he wouldn't quite understand so whacked a part-worn on for the day. The lad at the breakers yard had the same diagnosis for my punctured tire as me...
After a week of rolling with a HU-flung-Dung, I couldn't stand it, so picked up a set of Team Dynamic Pro Race 2's from the Nutz forum with 2 decent tires and 2 knackered ones.
Swapped the Proxies from the Rota Flight's and volla! Well not so much, as my standard Nutz (sorry!) didn't give enough clearance for the socket. After a wee bit of head scratching and consultation on here i plumped for some tuning nuts from Driftworks, which turned up the next day.
Free packet of Haribo, that's what I call customer service!
Popped the 4 wheels in the car and went to fit them in my pals garage. Who say's the MX isn't practical...
I swapped the ashtray for a cupholder (only tires are for smoking), and I also got a pool ball gear knob off eBay, number 5 so don't think I'm driving a MX-3...
Popped the Pro Race 2's on, very chuffed.
Next up was the ICE. I know the MX is a crap base for car audio, but it's in my heritage (Mk 5 Fiesta and C2 VTR) so when a Clarion 7" touchscreen popped up on Gumtree I couldn't resist. Besides, who doesn't like watching Still Game when the car's heating up?
It turns out I wasn't the only one who fancied watching a DVD while heating up their car...
The stripped out look, Glasgow style...
This 1 week after my bike was stolen from the close, the joys of living in Glasgow eh?
I thought I had better get something to "discourage" any other t*ats from breaking in. Turns out it can also be used as a style bar too
I also took the more practical step of ordering a new window from AK Automotive for a very reasonable £10 + £10 posted and took the oppertunity to quiz the guys about colies (coming soon). Great guys, great service and straight down the line, can't recommend them highly enough! Fitting the window on the other hand wasn't so reasonable, with Autoglass wanting £150 + vat for the job. Had a ring round and eventually plumped for Premier Windscreens in Glasgow, top blokes who managed to squeeze me in at 4 on Easter Friday and had the job done in 40 minuets. If anyone needs any glass work doing in Scotland I can't recommend them enough and they have branches in Aberdeen and Edinburgh too.
They also have special windows in the waiting room just in case you forget which country your in...
Yesterday I popped to my mates in Northumberland to give me a hand fitting a of fset eBay bracket (read: he fabricated another bracket and fitted it, I drank all his tea)
Then popped on my pressed plates aff eBay for a JDM-UK hybrid look, JD-UK yo!
That's about it so far, plenty more to come once Student Finance pays up!
